Seán Keane from County Galway is decribed as the `greatest musical find of the 90`s` by `The London Independent`. Traditional Irish, folk and even country and blues songs all lend themselves to his unique style and unforgettable voice. Growing up in a family of singers and musicians, Seán learned the sean-nós style of singing from his mother and his aunts. Singing was his life, even in early childhood; by the time Seán reached his teens, he had collected thirteen All-Ireland medals in Fleadh Ceoil competitions. He was by then an accomplished whistle and flute player as well and had taken up the uilleann pipes and bodhraun.

When he joined his first group, `Shegui`, he had already served a long apprenticeship; after travelling throughout Europe with the band, he left to join `Reel Union`, a group which also featured sister Dolores and accordion player Máirtín O`Connor. Later, he was part of `Arcady`, with such well known names as Johnny `Ringo` McDonagh, Sharon Shannon and Frances Black. After a short flirtation with the theatre when he played in the Druid production of the `Midnight Court` and the Abbey Theatre`s `Sheep`s Milk on the Boil`, Seán embarked on his solo career in 1993. `All Heart , No Roses` received rave reviews and was chosen as `Debut Folk Album of the Year` by Q Magazine. In the years following, success continued with Meteor Award nominations, `Best Male Folk Performer` from Irish Music Magazine (three times) ,a similar award from the London `Irish World`,as well as numerous Irish accolades. `A Portrait`, a collection of Seán`s songs, is a multi-platinum Irish seller. All of his solo albums are platinum sellers and remain in constant demand.

Six solo albums later, Seán Keane continues to delight audiences all over the world with his live performances and recorded work. He tours regularly with his band in Ireland, Austria, Germany, the US and Canada as well as appearing at major festivals world-wide.

Sean Keane is a singer and multi-instrumentalist of skill, acclaim and flair. He is rooted firmly in old Ireland with the Keane family tradition of seanos singing , but his music branches out gloriously from those roots pulling sustenance from many genres.Seans voice has untold depth, range and maturity; his skill on the flute, whistles and pipes with which he puctuates songs, make his work unforgettable

Town Hall Cinema Set To Reopen

The movies make a return to the Town Hall Theatre after a break of nearly a quarter of century. Some 87 years after the first “talkies” screened by the Toft family in what they called the Plaza Cinema. The Cinema project is in direct response to the results of the online survey carried out by BACD – as part of the Town Benchmarking Exercise underway currently, which asked people what they would enjoy most in town.

Run and managed by the Town Hall Theatre on a cost recovery basis, the proceeds from the first pilot phase will be re-invested in the ongoing refurbishment and minor works programme.

The cinema will operate for 3 screenings each weekend (when there is no live show on stage) at designated times of Friday 9.15pm, Saturday Children’s Matinee at 4pm and Saturday night show at 8.30pm. It is also planned to do special holiday time screenings.

Admission prices will be adults €7, Concessions €5, Family Ticket (2 adults, 2 children) €18 and Children €3. Birthday parties and group discounts for numbers of 10 or more can be organised in advance. Opening on the weekend of the 21st of November – the cinema will be available to schools and other groups during mid-week times by prior appointment.

Movie choices will be made by the audience through social media polls and audience sampling. Friday nights flick will be from the back collection, the Saturday night time screening will be a recently released movie and the kids Matinee will be a blend of both.

The Cinema will run for the last 2 weekends in November, a Christmas special weekend on Dec 19th/20th, during the Christmas Holidays 29th/30th and January 2nd/3rd. Full details of screenings will be on the Facebook page and published in Ballinasloe Life.

Fletcher Electrical are providers of the Technical Equipment which includes a full Stage Height screen and state of the art quality projector. The Fair and Festival Committee have graciously provided their sound system on a lease basis for the pilot season which will run to the early summer.

Town Hall Chair Mary O’ Connell said “We are overwhelmed with the positive response of the community to date and hope that after all the research and engagement – people will now come out and support – what is a very significant investment for our Board in the upgrading of the facilities for our wonderful venue” .

The opening weekend will feature the runaway winner of the online poll – “The Shawshank Redemption” starring Morgan Freeman, on the Friday Gala opening night. The movie tells the story of a banker named Andy Dufresne who is convicted of a double murder in 1946 even though he proclaims his innocence.

The Lion King is first in the Saturday Matinee slot. The 1994 American animated musical adventure film produced by Walt Disney follows Simba, a young lion club who has ran away after being tricked into thinking he caused his father’s death.

The Saturday night sees Angelina Jolie starring in Maleficent. Disney’s iconic villain Maleficent from “Sleeping Beauty”, a vengeful fairy, is driven to curse an infant princess only to discover that the child may be the one person who can restore peace to their troubled land.

The Cinema will be able to feature advertising through Ballinasloe Life from the New Year and Advertising Manager Lyn Donnelly will be offering attractive deals to LIFE Subscribers and Advertisers for Big Screen access.
